McKeesport Housing Authority Partners with The Home Depot to Host Free Training and Tool Demo Workshop
McKeesport Housing Authority will host experts from The Home Depot as they share the latest and greatest in maintenance and construction tools. McKeesport has invited representatives of fellow housing authorities across Western Pennsylvania as well as area contractors, handy workers and landlords to take part in a free workshop that will include training and tool demonstrations. The event is set for Friday from 8 a.m. to noon at the E. R. Crawford Village Family Service Center, 2901 Brownlee Ave., McKeesport. “The primary focus of this event is to help local contractors see some new tools,” said Diane Raible, deputy executive director of McKeesport Housing Authority. “We want to give them an opportunity to learn how to do things more easily and efficiently.”
Steve Elkin, regional pro/rental manager for The Home Depot, said community expos like Friday’s even in McKeesport allow the retailer to share new products that are out on the market. “A focus for The Home Depot is coming up with new innovative products that save time for the contractors,” Elkin said. “We have more eco-friendly products that are better for the environment. And we have products that, overall, will improve (contractors’) craftsmanship.” Advertisements tout the event as a means to teach housing authorities and contractors to save time, save money and improve workmanship. “This effort is something that’s always going on,” Elkin said. “It’s based on the need and in this case, it’s about the partnership we have with McKeesport Housing Authority.”
Both The Home Depot and McKeesport Housing Authority are affiliated with the U.S. Communities Government Purchasing Alliance. U.S. Communities is a national cooperative purchasing program intended to simplify products and service procurement for maintenance, repair and operations. It strengthens the purchasing power of governments, school systems and other public entities by reducing cost and meeting bid requirements. Raible said taking part in Friday’s free workshop is an opportunity in itself for contractors to save time and money.
“Staff training is difficult because you have to pull people off the job to attend a full day of training,” Raible said. “This is a brief opportunity for workers to look at new products on the line.” McKeesport Housing Authority maintenance supervisor Russ Miller said training in any form is a good thing. “Knowledge is valuable,” Miller said. “We believe this exhibition will show our crews easier ways and quicker ways to get jobs done.”
